Mom to Mom: Why I Regret Donating My Placenta

As a new mom, I was faced with a decision that I had not anticipated before the arrival of my baby: what to do with my placenta. I was asked if I wanted to donate it for stem cell research, and because I love to help others, I didn't hesitate to say yes.

However, looking back, I regret that decision and wish I had kept my placenta instead of donating it. My story will help other moms make an informed decision about what to do with their placentas.

Placenta benefits after birth

I learned about the benefits of consuming your placenta postpartum when I attended a conversation on postpartum depression (PPD) led by our doula. I was surprised to learn that many moms had turned to consuming their placenta as a way to alleviate symptoms of PPD.

The placenta is rich in nutrients and hormones that can help with postpartum recovery. It is believed that consuming your placenta can help balance hormones, increase energy levels, and even improve milk production.

Research on placenta and postpartum depression

A study published by the Journal of Obstetrics and Gynecologic & Neonatal Nursing found that consuming your placenta does have potential benefits, including decreasing the risk of PPD, increasing milk production, and reducing postpartum bleeding. However, it is essential to note that the study also states that more research needs to be done to fully understand the benefits of consuming your placenta.1

Knowledge and awareness

One of the biggest regrets I have about donating my placenta is that I didn't know about its potential benefits at the time. I was not alone in this ignorance – many women in our community are not aware of the benefits of consuming their placenta. This lack of knowledge is unsurprising, given that it is not widely discussed or promoted in mainstream media.

It was only after attending the conversation on PPD that I learned about the potential benefits of consuming my placenta. Other moms in the community shared their stories of how consuming their placenta had helped them with their recovery after giving birth. It was a revelation.

Decision to donate my placenta

When I was asked if I wanted to donate my placenta, I didn't hesitate to say yes. I love helping others, and the idea of my placenta being used for stem cell research was appealing. I was contributing to a worthy cause.

However, looking back, I realize I didn't fully understand what donating my placenta for stem cell research meant. I didn't know that my placenta would be destroyed in the process of extracting the stem cells. I had yet to consider what that meant and the possible benefits of consuming my placenta.

Making an informed decision after birth

As a new mom, making decisions about what to do with your placenta can be overwhelming. However, I encourage all moms to take the time to research the options and make an informed decision. Talk to your healthcare providers, doulas, and other moms for their opinions and insights.

If you are considering consuming your placenta, find a reputable provider to prepare it safely and appropriately.

Ultimately, the decision about what to do with your placenta is a personal one. It's essential to consider your values, beliefs, and needs when making this decision. Just ensure you have all the information you need to make an informed choice.

Planning for you postpartum placenta

In the end, I regret donating my placenta and wish I had kept it instead. I hope my story encourages other moms to consider this option. Whether you choose to donate, consume, or discard your placenta, make sure you make an informed decision that is right for you and your baby.
